Описание The discovery of a low temperature structural transition in an ionic covalent crystal with a high degree of covalency was discussed. The structural transitions were found to be induced by a three dimensional impurity of an extremely low concentration. Experiments on elastic scattering of thermal neutrons were performed at a multi-detector diffractometer meant for single crystals. It was found that effective monochromatization of the initial beam and the optimum choice of the neutron's wavelength made it possible to suppress a multiple harmonic effect, improving the method sensitivity.

The authors are grateful to V.N. Fleurov and S. Flach for discussion of the experimental results, to J.-C. Rouchaud, V.V. Fedorenko, V.A. Sazonova and S.N. Shamin for the help in certification and preparation of the samples. The study was partly supported by the MIS and T of the Russian Federation (contract No.40.012.1.1.1150) and by the Programm of the President of the Russian Federation for support of leading scientific schools (Grant No.639.2003.2).
