In the present paper the principles of namegiving the Rurikides dynasty in XIV—XVI centuries are analyzed. Even in the pre-Mongolian Rus’ there was prohibition of naming a child by the name of his living father or grandfather. In the paper it is shown that this prohibition did not completely disappear even in XIV — XVI centuries. If the son and father had the same name (Ivan Ivanovich, Vasily Vasiljevich etc.), then they had different saint’ patrons. If a child had the name of his deceased relative, he had the same saint patron as his older relative. Finally, if several sons in the family had the same name, they were called in honor of the same saint.
