This article presents findings from the study of identities of contemporary British Muslims, UK citizens and residents of London, Manchester, Oldham, Bradford, and other cities. The research focuses on their in-between status and their relationship with the notion of Britishness. The study is based on the historiographical, political, museum, and media sources and materials of ethnographic field studies. The paper describes British Muslims, their identity development, and the role of urban centers and particular neighborhood types in this process, examined through urban and visual anthropology tools. The article discusses three types of urban neighborhoods that shape the appearance of British Islam as a unique phenomenon: 1) ghettos, presenting (but not preserving) a micro-version of the world that its inhabitants once left; 2) neighborhoods of cosmopolitan, commercial, multicultural type; 3) neighborhoods that do not exist as such: territories that remain an idea, a virtual space enclosed within central and bohemian districts hosting Muslim entertainment subcultures, Muslim hipsters, politicized university youth, etc. The territories of the symbolic frontier, or in-between spaces, have distinct physical borders set by the immigrant residency destinations. Still, these borders tend to dissolve in geographical and symbolic senses due to modern socio-cultural processes and the development of British Islam underlying their identity. The author shows that British Islam can be seen as a resource that unites diverse ethnic communities, thus contributing to the success of the younger generation in social competition with long-time residents, their individualization, and the reduction of religious radicalism. © 2023, Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera), Russian Academy of Sciences.
